Secretary Rice: Travel to Germany and Switzerland, January 22-23, 2008

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings and Henrietta H. Fore. Administrator, US Agency for International Development (USAID), are among those representing the United States at this year’s Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Secretary Rice delivered a keynote address at the opening session on January 23, and conducted bilateral meetings with senior Swiss officials during her visit.

Secretary Spellings is participating in two roundtable debates: “Partnerships for Education,” on January 24 and “Global Education Alliance Roundtable,” on January 25.

The Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, is in attendance at the Annual Meeting to take part in a series of roundtable debates on education, culture, climate change, and financial risk management.

More than 2,500 participants from 88 countries are in Davos, including 27 heads of state or government, 113 cabinet ministers, along with religious leaders, media leaders and heads of non-governmental organizations. Around 60% of the participants are business leaders drawn principally from the Forum's members – 1,000 of the foremost companies from around the world and across all economic sectors.

For over three decades, the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting has provided an unrivalled platform for leaders from all walks of life to shape the global agenda at the start of each year. At the core is its multistakeholder model that leverages the collective wisdom of leaders from business, government, the media, academia, the arts and civil society by building a global platform for collaboration and action to address priorities on the global agenda.

The World Economic Forum is an independent international organization committed to improving the state of the world by engaging leaders in partnerships to shape global, regional and industry agendas. Incorporated as a foundation in 1971, and based in Geneva, Switzerland, the World Economic Forum is impartial and not-for-profit; it is tied to no political, partisan or national interests.
