First Lady Makes Third Trip to Africa, Discusses Malaria, HIV/AIDS and Literacy
July, 2007
TITLE

First Lady Laura Bush recently made her third trip to Africa on June 25-29, including stops in Senegal, Mozambique, Mali and Zambia, with a focus on HIV/AIDS and Malaria prevention, education, and women’s empowerment.

Among the scheduled events was a roundtable discussion on literacy in Mali, which Mrs. Bush hosted on June 29th, at the Nelson Mandela School in Bamako. Roundtable participants included Maria Keita, who participated in the White House conference on Global Literacy in New York City in September 2006, and Adama Ouane of the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning. Teachers, school leadership figures and USAID staff members also participated in the discussion.

Mali will host its own Literacy conference in Bamako from September 10-12, 2007, one of 6 follow-up conferences to be held by UNESCO as a result of the White House conference on Global Literacy.
