On June 15, President Bush signed a proclamation that created the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Marine
National Monument. The island chain stretches about 1,400 miles across the Pacific northwest, making it
by far the largest marine sanctuary in the world. The proclamation highlighted the value of the
Northwestern Hawaiian Islands marine area, and will enable it to receive the U.S. government’s highest
level of marine environmental protection. In addition to demonstrating a commitment by the U.S. government
to be a good steward of a very large and important marine area, it will create new opportunities for ocean
education and research for decades to come. Thousands of species of marine life will continue to thrive
thanks to the creation of this new national monument.
