On June 9, 2006, the Department of State sent proposed legislation to Congress that would require the
United States to join the United Kingdom, Canada, and France in implementing an international agreement
that would lead to increased protection of the RMS Titanic and its wreck site. The tragic sinking of the
Titanic ninety-six years ago represents a definitive and poignant moment in history. This proposed
legislation aims to protect the site of the wreckage, in memory of the people who perished in the sinking.
By enacting this agreement, the United States will become a leader in protecting the scientific, cultural,
and historic significance of the wreck site.
