At a recent roundtable discussion in Costa Rica, Mrs. Laura Bush, First Lady of the United States, met with experts on education and literacy to share their ideas on how to improve educational opportunities for young people in Costa Rica and Central America. The participants discussed the importance of universal primary education, one of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. Mrs. Bush spoke in depth about the training of teachers and the importance of retraining them when new methods of teaching are developed. Education is the responsibility of everyone in society – the government, the community, and families. After all, education is an investment in the future, as Mr. Wolfgang Reuther, the Director of UNESCO in Costa Rica, pointed out. All of the participants of the roundtable discussion were hopeful that organizations such as UNESCO and UNICEF can work together to further improve education. Mrs. Bush ended the discussion by stating that it is time for the world “to talk about ways we can work together, every country around the world, to make sure boys and girls are educated.”
