In June 2006, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) organized a seminar on trademark law,
sponsored by the Global Intellectual Property Academy. The Commerce Department established the Academy in 2005
to offer training to judges and other legislative experts in international property obligations and best
practices. Representatives from twelve countries, including Albania, Brazil, and Kenya, attended the Trademark
Law Program to increase their knowledge of property rights and corresponding legislation.
The lectures and discussions that took place focused on different topics in trademark law, including distinctiveness,
dilution law, and international trademark treaties. Participants also learned about the use of information
technologies in trademark examination.
