Stephen Engelken

Stephen Engelken is a veteran of more than 30 years in the U.S. Foreign Service. He began his career with service as a vice consul at the U.S. Consulate in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia and subsequently served at U.S. Embassies in Jordan, Lebanon, Italy, France, and Australia. Immediately before joining the staff of the U.S. Mission to UNESCO in June 2007, Mr. Engelken served in Washington as director of the Office of Pakistan and Bangladesh Affairs in the State Department’s South and Central Asia Bureau.

Mr. Engelken is married to Jo Ellen Powell, who is also a career Foreign Service Officer. She serves as the U.S. Consul General in Frankfurt, Germany.

Mr. Engelken is a native of Cincinnati, Ohio. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations from George Washington University (1974) and a diploma (1992) as Administrateur Civil from the Ecole Nationale de l’Administration in Paris, France. He speaks French, Italian, and Arabic.
